Product sense for the AI PM
The instinct for what makes a product succeed — sharpened for the AI era.
Product sense is the instinct for what makes a product succeed. It's the ability to understand user needs, even unspoken ones, and craft solutions that feel just right. It's not an innate gift — it's a skill you sharpen deliberately. For APMs and PMs moving into AI product management, this skill decides whether you can lead the conversation about an AI feature or just nod along in it. A model is a new, probabilistic material. Product sense tells you what to build with it, for whom, and why.
This module adapts a playbook for mid-career PMs into a hands-on course. It's organized around the five areas that compound into strong product sense. A sixth lesson then applies all of it to the specifics of building AI products.
The knowledge graph
Five habits feed one judgment. That judgment then gets stress-tested by a new material:
Five habits feed one judgment · then a new material stress-tests it
A model is a new, probabilistic material — product sense tells you what to build with it, for whom, and why.
- Motivation theory — the behaviour equation, friction, satisfaction, and ethical nudges: how to design experiences that move users to act.
- Cognitive empathy — metacognition, intellectual flexibility, and mental simulation: anticipating what users need before they say it.
- User research — the craft of finding out: matching method to question, interviewing without leading, and researching trust in AI products.
- Creativity — from strategic thinking (positioning, segmentation, differentiation) to creative execution (mindset, rituals, ideation techniques).
- Communication — artifacts (vision, strategy, proposals), influencing without authority, and navigating product-sense interviews.
- Domain expertise — turning deep industry knowledge into intuition, building it fast, and not getting trapped by it.
- Product sense for AI products — the capstone: what changes when the material is a probabilistic model (evals as taste, trust under non-determinism, latency and cost as UX, keeping a human in the loop).
Each lesson pairs the craft with a 🎯 For the AI PM briefing. It explains why the craft matters when your product is powered by a model, and gives you a sharper question to ask.
